LIFE OUTSIDE TEACHING

Balance in life is important. The most important part of my life is my beautiful wife and daughter. Spending time with them from holiday adventures to just lazing around the house is pure gold. Watching my daughter grow up is nothing short of amazing. Now that she is at school, sharing her love of books and dancing and singing are moments to look forward to everyday.

Luisa and I met at Kedgley Intermediate where we were both teaching. We share a love of the theatre and have worked on shows together where she has been choreographer. She also dragged me along to dance lessons at AUT and this has added an unforseen string to my bow. She also choreographed regular performaces by the staff at Kedgley Intermediate for the entertainment of the students. They got a kick seeing their teachers dressed up and performing.

Melody our daughter is now five and has inherited both a love of music and dance. Her day is a musical and she sees everything as an adventure and opportunity to discover new things.

I have always been an enthusiastic if somewhat amatuer fisherman. The excitement of catching fish never lessens. Mind you a bad days fishing is still an opportunity to relax and get away from everything. So I always enjoy every time I go out regardless of whether I catch anything. New Zealand is blessed with stunning views so just sitting out on a boat while the day drifts by is highly theraputic.

Recently I have taken up kayak fishing which combines the opportunity to exercise with the thrill of catching a good size fish. It is not as easy as it looks as maintaining your balance while setting an anchor or pulling in a good size fish is tricky business.  I had to learn the hard way and ended up in the water with all my gear.

Good size snapper can be caught just off the beach at Mellons Bay. It takes me 10 minutes to get there from home, 20 minutes to set up the kayak and 10 minutes to paddle to a good spot. Sometimes the fish start biting straight away. Hitting the water just before sunrise and having the line in the water just as the sun comes up produces the best results and  I usually have the place to myself . It is great to have such a good fishing spot close to home.

Below is where I launch the kayak. I paddle out 50m then paddle right till I come in line with a big palm tree up on the hill. You can grab the image and move it around and zoom in and out.

In my younger days I played a lot of cricket, opening the bowling for Manurewa Senior A’s. These days the run up is considerably shorter as I still manage to turn out for the Grafton Presidents XI and roll my arm over.
